Anaphora
In chapter eight, we finally meet Michael Campbell. I am not really sure why Brett wants to marry him. She says herself "This drunkard is Mike Campbell. Mr. Campbell is an undischarged bankrupt" (page 85). This chapter makes Mike seem like he is always a careless drunk, and Brett knows it. At the end of this chapter there is an anaphora. Mike keeps repeating the words "You are a lovely piece" to Brett (page 85). This repetition emphasizes how Mike feels about Brett. He loves her and wants to be with her; however, he is not the only one that we know of who feels this way about Brett. We already know Jake loves her too...but why does she choose Mike if she seems to think he is just a drunkard?

This kind of confused me a tad too. I don't see why Brett feels so compelled to even get married at all. She seems to have plenty of fun just prancing about in a long series of affairs and flings. Her entire character seems to exude female independence, so I don't even see why she wants to get married. I guess the easiest answer is possibly money, which seems to coincide with her choosing Mike. On page 46, Jake tells Cohn "She's in love with Mike Campbell, and she's going to marry him. He's going to be rich as hell some day." Seems like money is her major incentive in choosing Mike.
ReplyDeleteyeah but from what we know of Mike...he doesn't appear to be on his way to becoming rich. right now he's bankrupt and spends what little he has on drinking...but maybe he has some plan to be rich some day? it just doesn't seem very likely to happen to me...but who knows?
